We were commissioned to create the identity and marketing materials for one of Brian Friel’s earliest significant plays - The Enemy Within. This new interpretation was directed by Donegal native and the Abbey Theatre’s Artistic Director Caitríona McLaughlin, it was produced by An Grianán Theatre in the Autumn of 2021.
Based on the self-exiled final years of St. Colmcille, the design solution seeks to illustrate the complex character of Colmcille who constantly struggles to balance the responsibilities of scholar, bard, and ruler with his commitment to his vocation.
The identity and subsequent marketing materials reference the duality of the play’s narrative—voluntary exile, two lives, and many roles, all of which lead to what could be perceived as self-imposed physical and mental torment.
