Sive by John B. Keane tells the story of how youth and innocence can be destroyed by the greed and cynicism of an older generation. Sive is beautiful, delicate and illegitimate. The local matchmaker schemes with Sive's family to sell her hand to a local farmer. She objects but the older generation can easily assert their own opinions. Sive does not. Her death is an inarticulate protest against the life she does not want.
Following discussion with the Director, we developed an image for Sive that demonstrates this historical silencing of women and youth in rural Ireland.
