We were invited to design a publication to document artist Niamh McCann’s practice to accompany a trio of national solo shows at Visual (Carlow), Solstice (Navan) and Limerick City Gallery of Art in 2016. The publication needed to document the development of Niamh’s recent practice/exhibitions alongside the first of these national shows in Visual (Carlow).
The book needed to reflect the recurring visual motifs and attitude found in Niamh’s work. Yves Klein Blue (YKB) is a pigment that Niamh uses extensively in her work. Working closely with expert fine art book printers and prepress specialists, we had a custom ink mixed to match YKB and commissioned bespoke colour separations to allow us introduce this ink/colour precisely where required when reproducing Niamh’s works. The ‘square bracket’ typographic motif that recurs throughout the book relates to the three different national ‘spaces’ that Niamh is exhibiting in as well as the installation format of much of her work (which is concerned with active use of the exhibition space — negative space).
