Father Ted, created by Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan for Hat Trick Productions, was first broadcast on Channel 4 on 21st April 1995 and ran until 1st May 1998, yet in this relatively short time it attracted a loyal audience. More importantly, by satirising Irish society at a time when the country was changing radically, it left a deep, lasting mark on the public consciousness. The characters were instantly recognisable, with dialogue so quotable the catchphrases entered into everyday language – and stayed there to this day.
With this in mind, we decided to avoid the traditional portrait approach and focus on the phrases associated with each of the leads, as a testimony to the brilliantly funny script and its flawless comic delivery, celebrating both the writers and the performers. We redrew the parochial house wallpapers associated with each character to create a graphic language distinct to Craggy Island and extended this approach to the accompanying first day cover, miniature sheet and booklet.
It was tremendous fun… just like Fr. Larry Duff.
