Brinkmanship Theatre’s East of Berlin is an intense relay of transferred guilt. Rudi, the protagonist, discovers to his horror that his Father was an SS doctor at Auschwitz.
Given Moscovitch’s sophisticated handling of the subject matter, we wanted to capture the tone of the play without having to rely on shock imagery. This resulted in our attention to the pivotal moment — when Rudy learns the truth of his Father while dissecting a beetle in science class. We sought to recreate the chilling discomfort of this scene through the use of colour and the sharp abstraction of the dissection.
