Dysfluent Issue 1

Dysfluent is an independent, non-profit magazine about people who stammer. The interviews within show that there’s strength in owning our differences, communicative or otherwise.

Instead of rendering speech as broken and fragmented as is commonly done, the magazine uses a custom typeface, Dysfluent Mono, that emulates the stammered voice. It stretches and repeats its letterforms showing a more positive interpretation of stammered speech as forming and nearing completion. This optimistic spin coincides with ideas around stammering pride and acceptance that have become prevalent in recent years. Dysfluent is a positive reclamation of the negative things society thinks about stammered speech, affirming that it is beautiful and unique in its own right.

Dysfluent is supported by the Irish Stammering Association and the British Stammering Association.
