As part of the 2016 IMRAM Irish Language Literature Festival programme, third and fourth year students on the BA (Hons) Visual Communication course at the Dublin School of Creative Arts, DIT produced an exhibition of Irish language poetry, typographically interpreted, under the tutelage of Clare Bell and Brenda Dermody. Included were the works of poets Declan Collinge, Rody Gorman, Gearóid Mac Lochlainn and Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh. Sixteen typographic interpretations were selected and printed onto postcards. They were then distributed in libraries, bars, bookshops, cinemas, and at IMRAM festival events. The inherent challenge in making the exhibition was to create impact using something as small and transient as a postcard.
The sea emerged as a recurring theme in many of the poems and IMRAM, the title of the festival itself, translates as ‘voyage’. Thus the idea of constructing a large scale tsunami of postcards seemed apposite. Three thousand postcards were used in the making of the installation and the students customised six thousand paperclips to thread the wave together.
The cards were printed by Plus Print, Dublin on 275gsm Artika Postcard one-sided stock in Pantone flourescent red 805 U, Pantone gold 871 U and Pantone black U. Our thanks to Liam Carson, IMRAM and Ciaran Smith, Plus Print.
