Adapted by Roddy Doyle from Nikolai Gogol, The Government Inspector is a satirical poke at parochial politics. Brown envelopes and bribes are the order of the day, until a case of mistaken identity puts the whole town in a muddle.
The core idea was to show the sense of fun and divilment for the colourful 2011 Abbey Christmas production. The government inspector’s real identity is hidden behind official pomposity, with Chagal and Russian matryoshka dolls beign key influences. To give him some extra camouflage we designed 4 different colour variants for the posters that were around the city.
